Biographical Information[edit]
Art Hoelskoetter played all nine positions in his four seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals. Although he played quite a few games at all the positions (except only one game in left field), he was mostly a third baseman in 1905 and 1906, mostly a second baseman in 1907, and mostly a catcher in 1908. As a pitcher, he was in 12 games in 1906, starting three games and finishing nine.
In the minors he played for Denver before his major league days and Milwaukee afterwards.
"Arthur Hoelskoetter has developed into a valuable utility man. He has been used nearly every place on the St. Louis team . . . and he does it well." - Sporting Life, July 21, 1906
"After being tried at every position on the ball field and making good at every position he tackled, Arthur Hoelskoetter, whose name is so long that the St. Louis scorers print 'Holly' on their cards instead, is to go behind the bat for the Cardinals." - Sporting Life, March 23, 1907
In the 1909 box scores published in the Indianapolis Star (and elsewhere) his name is recorded as "Hosteter." And in Marshall Wright's compendium of American Association statistics (McFarland; 1997), his name is listed as "Arthur Hostetler" for the 1909 Milwaukee Brewers.
