Biographical Information[edit]
West Virginia native Arnold Carter played eight seasons in pro baseball from 1940 to 1947. The left-hander spent two full seasons in the majors with the Cincinnati Reds, going 11-7 in 1944 and 2-4 in 1945. In total, he was 13-11 with a 2.72 ERA while pitching 195 1/3 innings in 46 games. When the vast majority of the boys returned from World War II, he was cast aside.
Carter spent six seasons in the minors, with three double digit win seasons. In 1941, Arnold was 13-8 in 29 games split with the Logan Indians of the Class D Mountain State League and the Columbia Reds of the Class B South Atlantic League. He followed with a 16-10 record in 35 games in 1942 with three different clubs, the Muskogee Reds, Ogden Reds and Columbia Reds. In 1943, Arnold spent the season with the Syracuse Chiefs of the AA (then the highest tier of the minors) International League, building a 14-12 record with a 2.35 ERA in 31 games. This opened his door to his big league bonanza. Carter ultimately finished his professional baseball career in 1947 with a minor league record of 58-48, pitching 924 innings in 149 games.
After baseball, he became a painter for the Ford Motor Company until his retirement. He died on April 12, 1989, in Louisville at 71.
