Biographical Information[edit]

Ari Sechopoulos has played in the independent leagues and San Marino and for the Greek national team.

He was born in Uruguay to a Greek father and Canadian mother; the family moved to Canada when he was a toddler. [1] He came to the US for college ball, hitting .259/.327/.439 as a freshman and .273/.370/.591 as a sophomore, fielding .991 at first. With his Greek roots, he was able to play for Greece in the 2018 C-Level European Championship. He was absolutely dominant in the round-robin phase, going 7 for 13 with 2 doubles, a triple, 2 homers, 2 walks, 7 runs and 15 RBI in 4 games while handling 24 chances error-free. He was among the leaders in average (7th), slugging (1st, 190 ahead of Brian McAuliffe), runs (tied for 4th), hits (6th), RBI (1st, 4 ahead of McAuliffe), homers (1st) and total bases (2nd, 2 behind McAuliffe). In the finale, though, he was 0 for 2 with a walk and a run as Greece lost to Ireland. [2]

His junior year, he slumped to .202/.312/.327. He batted .316/.458/.579 with six runs, five RBI and five walks in five games in the 2019 B-Level European Championship, handling 38 chances error-free. He homered off Rody Castelló. Only Nikita Monakhov had more error-free chances in the event. [3] He was hitting .360/.475/.680 with 20 RBI after 14 games in the 2020 college season before it was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. He returned for a fifth year and hit .285/.351/.468 with 40 RBI in 50 games as a graduate student. He finished 14th in school history with 25 career home runs. [4] He had a brief stint with the Utica Unicorns (2 for 19, 2B, HR, 3 BB) but spent most of the summer with ASD San Marino, hitting .275/.393/.549 while playing error-free ball. He was 3 for 16 with 3 walks, a homer, 4 runs and 3 RBI when they won the 2021 Italian Series. [5]

Sechopoulos suited up for Greece twice that year as well. In the 2021 European Championship Qualifier, he was 3 for 12 with a homer, six walks and six runs as Greece won a spot in the 2021 European Championship. Only Tom Roulis had more runs in Greece's qualifier and no one had more walks. [6] At the 2021 Euros, he moved to right field as Nick Halamandaris took over 1B. He scored three runs in a slugfest with Austria. In the 13th/14th place game, he was 2 for 3 with two walks against Ukraine's Kostiantyn Chukhas but Greece lost, 5-4. For the Euros, he hit .385/.448/.500 and led Greece in hits. He tied for 8th in the event in doubles (3). [7]
