Biographical Information[edit]

Antonio Estrella pitched seven seasons in the minors and was on the Cuban national team.

Estrella had a 3.00 ERA and no decisions for Cuba in the 1944 Amateur World Series before the team withdrew due to complaints about umpires biased in favor of host Venezuela. [1] He turned pro in 1946, going 4-2 with a 1.91 ERA for the West Palm Beach Indians. The next year, he was a mainstay of the West Palm Beach staff, posting a 12-16, 3.15 record. He tied John Johnson for second in the Florida International League in losses, was 6th in games pitched (45) and was 7th in IP (254, between Zeke Graham and Catayo González). He was 8-16 with a 3.01 ERA in 46 games (266 IP) the next year. He tied Leonardo Goicoechea and William Revels for 5th in losses, tied Tommy Ayers for third in appearances and was 9th in innings, between Juan Montero and Connie Marrero.

In 1949, the right-hander pitched for West Palm Beach (8-9, 4.11) and the New Iberia Cardinals (3-3, 3.72). He was on the champion Havana Cubans in 1950, with a 4-2, 2.89 record, one of only two pitchers on their nine-man staff who never made the majors (Antonio Lorenzo was the other). He was 5-6 with a 5.06 ERA for the 1952 Paris Indians then closed out with a 6-7, 3.44 record for Paris in 1953, having gone 50-61 with a 3.43 ERA as a pro and having hit .185.
