Biographical Information[edit]

Anthony Vasquez was drafted the Seattle Mariners in the 18th round of the 2009 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Greg Whitworth and made his pro debut that summer.

Vasquez was a winner in his first major league start, coming in the second game of a doubleheader for the Seattle Mariners against the Cleveland Indians on August 23, 2011. He gave up 6 runs on 9 hits in 5.1 innings, but was the beneficiary of a very good offensive performance by his teammates, who scored 12 runs to give him a 12-7 win. He was roughed up again in his next start, giving up 8 runs in 4 innings, including two homers by fellow rookie Mike Trout, in a start against the Los Angeles Angels on August 30th. This time, his teammates couldn't bail him out and he was charged with the 13-6 loss. Overall, he went 1-6, 8.90 in 7 starts for the Mariners that season.

In 2012, Vasquez made only 11 starts for the AAA Tacoma Rainiers before being sidelined by a shoulder injury. He was 5-4, 6.53. While working out at the Mariners training complex in Peoria, AZ in November of that year, he complained of headaches and vision problems. Tests showed that the cause was extremely serious, as he was suffering from a lesion in his brain and needed emergency surgery, which was performed on November 16th at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, AZ. The surgery was successful and was described by surgeons as life-saving, as the tangle of blood vessels which caused the condition could have provoked a ruptured blood vessel at any time. But thanks to the surgery, he was able to return to his home in San Antonio, TX a few days later and was on track to return to resume pitching the following spring.

His father Rudy Vasquez has been a scout.
