Biographical Information[edit]
Anthony "Tony" Smith played professionally in the independent leagues from 2012-2015. He spent the first two years with the Trinidad Triggers of the Pecos League. He finished 2013 with one game for the El Paso Diablos of the American Association. Smith moved to the Schaumburg Boomers of the Frontier League in 2014 and helped them win a championship for the second consecutive season. In 2015 Smith was traded to the Winnipeg Goldeyes shortly before the season began. In his four seasons, Smith had a 21-10 record with a 4.73 ERA.
Following his playing career, Smith moved immediately into coaching with the Boomers. He was their bullpen coach in 2016 and the pitching coach from 2017-2019. The Detroit Tigers hired Smith in 2020 for a development coach role with the Erie SeaWolves prior to the coronavirus pandemic forcing the cancellation of the minor league season. Smith was the development coach for Erie in 2021.
