Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Anthony Castro was signed by the Detroit Tigers and scouts Oscar Garcia and Pedro Chávez on July 18, 2011. It took him a while to establish himself as a prospect, as he spent his first three seasons in Rookie-class, then missed all of 2015, and was back in the Gulf Coast League in 2016. He finally got to full season ball in 2017, with the West Michigan Whitecaps of the Midwest League, going 10-6, 2.49 in 21 starts. He moved up relatively quickly after that, reaching AA in 2018, a season he split between the Lakeland Flying Tigers and Erie SeaWolves, going 9-4, 3.34. In 2019, He spent the entire season at Erie, going 5-3, 4.40 and made his major league debut in the early days of the delayed 2020 season, allowing 2 runs in one inning of work for the Tigers on July 27th.
He was claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays on December 20, 2020 and was brought up to the major league team on April 14, 2021 to replace Julian Merryweather, who had been placed on the COVID-19 list. He showed some flashes of brilliance during his rookie season, but was also hit hard at times, going 1-2, 4.74 with 1 save in 25 games, and 32 strikeouts and 8 walks in 24 2/3 innings. He was part of a bullpen that generally underperformed and saw constant turnover: he was twice placed on the injured list and sent down to the AAA Buffalo Bisons 4 times, only to be called back shortly afterwards each time. Indeed, he only had time to make 10 appearances for Buffalo in between all the shuttling, but pitched well there, with an ERA of 1.80.
After failing to make the Blue Jays' opening day roster in 2022, he was traded to the Cleveland Guardians in return for OF Bradley Zimmer on April 7th.
