Biographical Information[edit]
Ángel Obando has pitched in the minors and for the Nicaraguan national team.
In the 2017 U-18 Baseball World Cup, he lost to Australia's Jack O'Loughlin and the Netherlands' Stefan Iannelli. He had a 14.05 ERA in his two starts. Only Mohamed Alaoui and Oscar Tucci had more losses and only Alaoui and Keagan Lazarus allowed more earned runs and he tied for 4th with 9 walks. [1] He signed with the New York Yankees and spent two summers with the DSL Yankees. He was 2-4 with a save and a 3.40 ERA for the 2018 DSL Yankees but allowed three runs in one inning the next year.
Obando was with Nicaragua when they swept the 2026 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers to win a spot in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. He relieved Leo Crawford in the 8th with one on, one out and a 1-1 game against Spain. He walked Wander Encarnación and Jesús Ustariz but escaped the jam by striking out Rusber Estrada (the qualifier's RBI leader) and then getting Edison Valerio. Frank Hernández singled to begin the 9th and Gabriel Lino bunted him over. The right-hander intentionally walked Carlos Colmenarez (who had homered earlier) and walked Andrés Angulo to load the bases. Yeris González took over and escaped the jam. [2]
