Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Andy Prater played professionally from 1996 to 2003. He was originally taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the 1st pick of the 2nd round of the 1996 amateur draft, one selection ahead of outfielder Jacque Jones and also ahead of future star Jimmy Rollins. He remained in the Pirates organization through 1999, then joined the San Diego Padres system for 2000 and 2001. In 2002 and 2003, he played in the indy leagues.

Prater never found great success in the minors, despite beginning his career with a 3.18 ERA in 12 starts for the GCL Pirates. His ERAs following that campaign were, respectively, 5.34, 5.76, 5.91, 4.20, 54.00, 4.82 and 6.53. He peaked at Single-A. Overall, he was 14-18 with a 5.11 ERA in 103 games (65 starts) in affiliated ball, 5-7, 5.50 in 35 games (14 starts) in independent ball and 19-25, 5.20 in 138 games (79 starts) combined. In 464 innings, he allowed 504 hits and 182 walks (1.478 WHIP), while striking out 332 batters.
