Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Andrew Abbott was drafted twice, the first time in the 36th round of the 2017 amateur draft by the New York Yankees coming out of high school, and the second time in the 2nd round of the 2021 amateur draft, by the Cincinnati Reds, out of the University of Virginia. In his last two seasons at UVa, he went 3-0, 1.35 in 9 games in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic brought the season to an early end, and 9-6, 2.87 as a starter in 2021. He was only the second pitcher in school history to strike out over 300 batters in his career and capped his stay by appearing in the 2021 College World Series.

He began his professional career in 2021 with the ACL Reds and also pitched briefly for the Daytona Tortugas of the Low-A Southeast. The reds were being prudent with him following a busy college season, as he pitched only 13 innings between the two strops, with no decisions and an ERA of 4.15. In 2022, he started the season with the Dayton Dragons of the Midwest League but then earned a quick promotion to the Chattanooga Lookouts of the AA Southern League. He was named to the National League team for the 2022 Futures Game and finished the year at 10-7, 3.81 in 25 games (24 starts), with 159 strikeouts and 48 walks in 118 innings.

He started the 2023 season with Chattanooga, then after 3 starts was promoted to the AAA Louisville Bats. In 10 games between the two teams, he was 4-0, 2.50 when he was called up to make his debut with Cincinnati on June 5th. facing the Milwaukee Brewers, he had a great game, giving up no runs on just one hit in 6 innings to receive credit for a 2-0 win. No pitcher in team history, dating back to 1893, had ever opened his career with a start of one hit or less over six or more scoreless innings. He was excellent in his next two starts as well: on June 10th, he pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, and on June 16th, he went 6 scoreless innings in a 2-1 win over the Houston Astros. After that start, his record stood at 3-0, 0.00, with no run allowed in 17 2/3 innings. No pitcher in the modern era had ever started his career with three starts of at least five scoreless innings.
