Biographical Information

Andrés Telemaco was a second baseman in Cuba from 1962-1974, noted for his double play pivot. He was with the Cuban national team for one tournament. His brother Miguel Telemaco also played in Cuba.

Telemaco tied for the Cuban Serie Nacional lead with four sacrifice hits in 1962, the first season for the new league, which had been established after the Cuban revolution. He hit .218/~.253/.333 for the Orientales that season. In 1962-1963, he batted .224/~.290/.235, followed by .253/~.319/.410 in 1963-1964. In 1964-1965, his batting line was only .125/~.316/.167. He rebounded to .273/~.362/.396 in 1965-1966 and set a new league record with 12 doubles, topping Tomás Soto's old mark by two, though Felipe Sarduy passed him the next year.

The Guantánamo native hit .197/~.220/.274 for the Orientales in 1966-1967. Moving to the Mineros in 1967-1968, he batted .313/~.363/.433 and scored 66 runs. He was only 15 points shy of batting champion José Pérez and six runs behind leader Antonio Jiménez. In 1968-1969, he hit .286/~.349/.395 and stole 23 bases. He scored nine runs in that season's All-Star Series, leading all players.

Telemaco was 9 for 27 to help Cuba win Gold in the 1969 Amateur World Series. In 1969-1970, the Mineros second sacker hit only .241/~.308/.372. He hit a dazzling .433/~.493/.716 in limited action in 1970-1971. He was 5 for 26 with 3 walks in 1971-1972 and 1 for 13 in 1972-1973. He finished his career with Oriente in 1973-1974, hitting .265/~.345/.333.

Overall, Andrés had batted .260/.337/.365 in 13 seasons in Cuba. In 1,791 at-bats, he had 22 triples, 25 home runs, 268 runs and 143 RBI while stealing 72 bases in 111 tries. He fielded .953.
