Biographical Information[edit]
The only major leaguer with the first name Algernon, Algernon "Algie" McBride played five seasons in the major leagues, hitting .292.
He was an outfielder in the National League, mostly playing center and right field.
Algie was born in Martinsville, IN and by 1889 was playing in the minors. He had a major league cup of coffee in 1896 and then became a regular with the Cincinnati Reds under manager Buck Ewing in 1898.
His best year with the bat was 1899, when he hit .347 in 64 games.
In 1902 he played for the minor league Milwaukee Brewers, where a teammate was George McBride, apparently no relation.
Although no other player through 2009 has the first name Algernon or Algie, Art Allison's middle name was Algernon while Red Causey's middle name was Algerton. There was also a minor leaguer named Algernon Crawley who played in the minors while McBride was also in the minors in 1897.
