Biographical Information[edit]

Alex Marconi reached AAA for one game as a player and later was a college coach.

Marconi hit .371 with 11 HR and 55 RBI in 210 AB as a college junior and was named All-Mid-American Conference at catcher. Returning for a senior season, he batted .353 with 18 homers, 64 runs and 57 RBI, again making All-Conference. He was just shy of the MAC leads in homers (by 2), runs (by one) and doubles (20, 2 off the pace). He tied for 28th in NCAA Division I in home runs. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays chose him with their 27th-round selection in the 2000 amateur draft.

Marconi split the summer of 2000 between the Princeton Devil Rays (.338/.377/.492 in 19 G) and Hudson Valley Renegades (.291/.340/.384 in 24 G), hitting very well but committing 15 passed balls in 39 games behind the plate. He saw limited action in 2001 as the third-string catcher for the Bakersfield Blaze (.239/.278/.294 in 34 G) and went 0 for 4 for the Durham Bulls in his lone AAA game. He backed up Pete LaForest with the 2002 Orlando Rays, batting only .189/.200/.232 and having 7 passed balls in 23 games at catcher. He ended his pro career with the independent Elmira Pioneers in 2003, hitting .292/.342/.420 with 20 doubles.

Marconi was an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina in 2005 and at Ball State University from 2006-2010. He was promoted to head coach of Ball State in 2011, but held the job for just two years.
