Biographical Information

Alejandro Pena pitched 15 seasons in the big leagues and is best known for winning the ERA championship in the 1984 National League. He had only two seasons in which he was primarily a starter, ending up with 74 saves in his major league career. However, both of his seasons as a starter were years when his ERA was under 3.00.

He was signed as an amateur free agent in 1978 for the Los Angeles Dodgers by scout Rafael Avila. He spent 1979 to 1980 in the minors after being signed, going 10-3 for the Vero Beach Dodgers in 1980. Parts of 1981 and 1982 were in the minors, too, and he had 22 saves with a 1.61 ERA for the Albuquerque Dukes in 1981.

Pena was on the Dodgers from 1981 to 1989, and appeared in post-season play in 1981, 1983 and 1988; he also played in the postseason with the Atlanta Braves) in 1991 and 1995. He won Game 1 of the 1988 World Series in relief, thanks to Kirk Gibson's dramatic pinch home run.

Peña was the pitching coach for the DSL Dodgers in 2010-2013.
