Biographical Information[edit]
Alejandro Mejia has played in the Dominican Republic and Japan and for the Dominican national team.
He hit .172/.265/.241 for the 2011 DSL Cardinals and .217/.279/.288 for the same team a year later, ending his time in the St. Louis Cardinals chain. The Hiroshima Carp signed him and he spent time in their Dominican Academy. [1] He made it to Asia in 2016 in the Japanese minors, hitting .259/.314/.418.
In 2017, he was excellent in the Japanese minors - .323/.376/.528, 18 HR, 78 RBI in 115 G. He led the Western League in average (.033 ahead of Shogo Sakakura), slugging (.043 ahead of Naomasa Yokawa), hits (133, 23 more than Yokawa), doubles (25, 3 ahead of Yokawa) and OPS (54 ahead of Yokawa). He was second in runs (58, 2 behind Yokawa), 3rd in homers (3 behind Xavier Batista and Yokawa), second in RBI (14 behind Yokawa), second in OBP (behind Hayato Shoji). [2] He got a brief call-up to the big club, but they had Takahiro Arai and Brad Eldred at first base already. He went 3 for 14 with a walk and a RBI, his first NPB hit coming off Shotaro Kasahara. [3] He also played briefly in the Dominican Winter League, going 1 for 8 for the Toros del Este.
Mejia spent part of 2018 with the Carp, batting .268/.318/.537 in 22 games, with his first NPB homer coming against Kazuki Kondo. He was part of a very crowded first base situation in Hiroshima; in addition to Mejia, Arai and Eldred, the team had Ryuhei Matsuyama and Batista as well as several others. He spent most of the year back on the farm, again posting big numbers - .337/.397/.652, 20 HR, 59 RBI in 76 G. He again won the batting title (.043 ahead of Hikaru Kawase), the slugging title (.171 ahead of Go Kamamoto), the OPS title (219 ahead of Kamamoto) and the RBI title (17 ahead of Kamamoto). He got the Triple Crown as he hit the most dingers, 5 more than runner-up Taiga Egoshi. He was 4th in runs, tied Tatsuki Kuwahara for 3rd with 91 hits, tied Yutaro Itayama for 3rd with 21 doubles and led in OBP (.026 ahead of Kawase). [4] He was 0 for 3 for Hiroshima in the 2018 Japan Series. [5]
He split 2019 between the top team (.259/.306/.426 in 56 G, backing up Tomohiro Abe at 3B and Batista at 1B) and the farm (.303/.373/.641, 21 HR, 56 RBI in 73 G). He did not qualify for the rate stats leaders but still led the Western League in homers (7 ahead of Yutaro Sugimoto) and RBI (3 more than Shu Masuda).
He was then on the Dominican squad for the 2019 Premier 12, backing up Edwin Espinal at first base. He got into one game, replacing Espinal late in a win over the Dutch national team. He flew out against Franklin Van Gurp. [6]
