Biographical Information[edit]
Broadway Aleck Smith, who was born and died in New York, NY, played nine seasons in the majors with seven teams. He had parts of four seasons with the Brooklyn Superbas and two seasons with the New York Giants. His most at-bats in a season were as a rookie in 1897 when he hit .300.
Aleck was primarily a catcher although he often played other positions.
He had a good partial season with the Baltimore Orioles in 1899 when he appeared in 41 games, hitting .383 in 121 at-bats. John McGraw, who was both his teammate and his manager, was two years younger than Aleck.
He died before he was 50.
