Biographical Information[edit]
Al Smith was an American League umpire from 1960 to 1964. During that time, he worked the All-Star Game in 1961 and 1963, as well as the 1964 World Series.
A rare thing among umpires of his time, he was college-educated. He began umpiring in the Sooner State League in 1951, then went to the Big State League in 1952-1953. Partway through the 1953 season, he moved to the Texas League, where he stayed until 1958. He was then promoted to the American Association in 1959 and the following year moved up to the majors. After his major league stint, he worked in the International League in 1965.
