Biographical Information[edit]

In 1986, Al Greene of the Monclova Steelers set the Mexican League walk record when he drew 152 to lead the league - 24 more than runner-up Nick Castaneda. Greene hit .336 with 39 homers, 127 runs and 122 RBI. His .524 OBP was third behind Willie Aikens and Castaneda, and he was third behind the same fellows (in different order) in runs. Prior to Greene's 1986 season, the record holder was... Al Greene, who drew 133 bases on balls in 1984, breaking Joe Pactwa's record of 132 from 1977.

Overall, Greene hit .303/~.471/.546 in 7 years in Mexico (1981-1987) with four seasons of 25+ homers and four .300 seasons. He led the Liga in walks four times and was runner-up on two other occasions. Greene had more walks in 7 years in the Mexican League than Frank Estrada had in 26 seasons there.

Al appeared in 29 games with the Detroit Tigers in 1979, slashing .136/.207/.305 in 70 plate appearances. He died in February 2014 at the age of 59.
