The Abilene Aces began play when the West Texas League was revived in 1928. The club finished in third place their first season and in fifth the next. After the 1929 season, the league once again folded. Notable players include Debs Garms and Euel Moore.
In the era 1925-40, air shows featuring air "aces," i.e. daring stunt pilots, toured America especially in the warmer climates of Texas and the Southern states. Abilene newspapers liked the Abilene "Aces" moniker because it was short for headlines. Source: Baseball Team Names, 1869-2012. McFarland Publishing (2012).
