The first professional baseball team in the history of Aberdeen, MD was the Aberdeen Arsenal. The club went 56-83 in one season (2000) in the Atlantic League, finishing ahead of only the Lehigh Valley Black Diamonds. Their attendance of 23,732 was more than Lehigh Valley (a traveling team primarily) but over 100,000 less than any other outfit. Managed by Darrell Evans, Aberdeen had one All-Star, 3B Dave Steed (.321, 4th in the league in average; 98 runs, 4th in the league; 22 homers, tied for 8th; 38 doubles, second in the league and 87 RBI). OF Gil Martinez was second in the Atlantic in average (.332). The top hurlers were Eric Olszewski (6-6, 3 Sv, 4.82) and Jose Alberro (3-6, 19 Sv, 4.62). The team was replaced by the Camden Riversharks in 2001.
