Biographical Information

Pitcher A.J. Blubaugh was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 7th round of the 2022 amateur draft from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In his sophomore season there, he had gone 3-3, 3.25 in 16 games, including 7 starts. It was actually his third season at the school, after having been used exclusively as a reliever in his first two years, but he was granted an extra year of eligibility when the COVID-19 pandemic ended his freshman season after just a few games.

He made his professional debut the year he was drafted, appearing with both the FCL Astros Blue and the Fayetteville Woodpeckers of the Carolina League, going 2-1, 4.34 in 6 games. The highlight of his season was being one of six pitchers to combine on a no-hitter against the Lynchburg Hillcats on September 7th and being named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Month for September. In 2023, he started the season with the Asheville Tourists of the South Atlantic League and finished with the Corpus Christi Hooks of the AA Texas League, as he was climbing the organizational ladder at a much faster speed than anticipated. In 26 games, including 12 starts, he went 6-3, 4.41 with 112 strikeouts in 100 innings. He then played in the Arizona Fall League after the season and was named to play in its Rising Stars Game, another sign that he had vaulted himself into the top prospect category.

2024 was his breakout season. After just one game for Corpus Christi, he was promoted to the AAA Sugar Land Space Cowboys on April 10th, and never looked back. He made 25 starts in 27 appearances for Sugar Land, going 12-4, 3.83, with 128 strikeouts in 124 2/3 innings. He led the Pacific Coast League in wins, finished 3rd in strikeouts and 8th in innings. He was named to play for the American League squad at the 2024 Futures Game which took place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX. He was issued an invitation to join the major league team for spring training in 2025.
