2000 American League Most Valuable Player Award
The winner of the 2000 American League Most Valuable Player Award was Jason Giambi of the Oakland Athletics.
At the time, this award was something of a toss-up with both Giambi and the Chicago White Sox Frank Thomas having had monster years. Both played for playoff teams, although voters most likely gave Giambi an edge for the way the Athletics played down the stretch, winning 75% of their games in September. The legitimacy of this award has been placed into some doubt as Giambi has admitted to a grand jury the use of steroids.
