1999 American League Most Valuable Player Award
The winner of the 1999 American League Most Valuable Player Award was Iván Rodríguez of the Texas Rangers.
The result of the vote was controversial as, while Rodriguez had a very solid season, second-place finisher Pedro Martinez of the Boston Red Sox had one of the greatest pitching seasons of all time, especially when judged in the context of the very live ball that prevailed at the time. He actually received more first-place votes than Rodriguez - 8 to 7 - but lost by a small margin, 252 to 239, because he was left off two ballots entirely.
