1990 Central American Games

From BR Bullpen

The 1990 Central American Games marked one of the brightest spots in Salvadoran baseball history. Held in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, they saw El Salvador stun Nicaragua in both the round-robin phase and the finale, the first time Nicaragua had been denied a Gold in the Central American Games in the modern era. In the finale, held January 12, El Salvador won 5-4. Cirilo Herrington (a Nicaraguan native) won in relief of Aurelio Villalta and #9 hitter José Antonio Marroquín scored the winning run in the 9th, when SS Julio Medina made an error on a ball hit by Rodolfo Rosales. El Salvador had last beaten Nicaragua in an official tournament in the 1952 Amateur World Series, with 15 losses in a row before this tournament.

Flag of Honduras Honduras (3-3) won their second straight Bronze Medal, followed in the standings by Flag of Costa Rica Costa Rica (1-5) and Flag of Guatemala Guatemala (0-4). El Salvador's David Nolasco led the event in average (.542) while teammates Rodolfo Rosales led with 10 runs and 4 steals, Wilfredo Flores led in ERA (0.56) and Herrington led with two saves. Nicaragua's Medina led with 13 RBI, Martín Polanco led with 9 strikeouts and Ariel Delgado tied for the lead with two homers. Also homering twice was Antenor Rivas of Honduras.
