History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 1989 Philadelphia Phillies played in the year in which Mike Schmidt retired. Though he retired early in the season, he was voted by the fans as the starting 3B for the National League in the 1989 All-Star Game. Although there was talk of that being an appropriate end for the game's all-time best third baseman, Schmidt declined to play in the game.

Once Schmidt retired, the Phillies dismantled the team, bringing in pieces that would one day be key to the 1993 pennant-winning team - pieces such as John Kruk and Lenny Dykstra.
