History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The Spiders are often remembered only from their horrible 1899 season, but they had some good years. The team finished second in the National League three times in the 1890's, with the 1895 Cleveland Spiders having the highest winning percentage.

The team went 84-46, ending up only three games out of first place. They played extremely well in the second half of the season, and were in first place during most of August.

Patsy Tebeau managed the Spiders during much of the franchise history, and in 1895 also played in 63 games, hitting .318. The top hitter on the team, 26-year-old Jesse Burkett, hit .405, tops in the 1895 National League. Ed McKean hit .341 while Chief Zimmer, the catcher, hit .340.

Cy Young was the star pitcher with a record of 35-10 at age 28, while Nig Cuppy had 26 wins and Bobby Wallace had 12.

The team would finish second again in 1896 before beginning the slide all the way to 12th in 1899.
