The 1880 Cincinnati Red Stockings were in fact a completely different franchise from the 1879 edition of the team. The original franchise had disbanded after completing the season and a new Cincinnati team, more often known as the Cincinnati Stars, a former semi-professional club led by Justus Thorner, took over the deserted slot in the National League.
