Zaïr Koeiman debuted in Hoofdklasse in 2006.
Koeiman played for the Young Orange in the 2005 World Youth Championship. In 2006, he made his Hoofdklasse debut with the Amsterdam Pirates, going 5 for 9 with 3 runs and 3 RBI. He then was in the 2006 World Junior Championship. In the 2007 Hoofdklasse, he hit .200/.316/.288 as a utility infielder for the Pirates. During 2008, the teenager batted .273/.309/.420 while splitting second base duties with Björn Henrichs. Koeiman was the starting 2B by the playoffs, when he hit .294/.368/.353. In the 2008 Holland Series, he was 5 for 14 with 3 RBI and handled 22 chances in 3 games at second as Amsterdam swept Kinheim for its first title in over two decades. In the Nettuno phase of the 2009 European Cup, Koeiman hit .308/.375/.308 with 4 runs in 4 games. He was 1 for 3 in the 2009 European Cup Final Four.
Koeiman was 1 for 13 with six strikeouts for the Netherlands in the 2009 World Port Tournament, splitting second base with fellow youngster Nick Urbanus.
He was chosen for the 2009 MLB European Academy.
