Biographical Information[edit]
Yoon-ho Shin was a one-year wonder, being named the best pitcher in the Korea Baseball Organization in 2001. He won 15 games and saved 18 in 2001; in his 12 other KBO seasons (through 2008) he has only won 13 and saved 10 combined.
Shin debuted in 1995 with the LG Twins, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) in 5 innings. In 1996, he walked 8 and allowed 7 hits and 7 runs in 4 innings. He did not pitch in 1997. In 1998, he went 2-1 with a 4.64 ERA in 34 games for LG. He was back down to 10 appearances in '99, with a 5.97 ERA and no decisions. In 2000, Shin gave up 10 hits and 7 runs in 4 2/3 IP and was 0-1.
Shin had his magic season in 2001. He pitched 70 games for LG, going 15-6 with 18 saves. He allowed 129 hits (but 91 walks) in 144 1/3 IP. He tied Min-han Son for the KBO lead in wins and was second to Seok-jin Park with a 3.12 ERA. He won a Gold Glove, which in the KBO meant he was the best player at his position. This would be the equivalent of an American Cy Young Award or Japanese Sawamura Award as the best pitcher in his country.
Shin returned to Earth quickly. In 2002, he was 4-3 with a save and a 6.45 ERA in 37 games, giving up 76 hits and 33 walks in 60 IP. During 2003, the LG hurler was 0-1 with 3 runs allowed in two innings, a far cry from his 2001 season and looking much more like 2000. In 2004, he had a 6-3, 5.43 record in 54 games.
Shin was 1-4 with 9 saves in 2005, but posted a 6.25 ERA and a WHIP of almost two. In 2006, the Twins pitcher gave up 17 runs in 22 2/3 IP in 14 outings. During 2007, he ended his long tenure with LG, going 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in games. Pitching for the 2008 SK Wyverns, Yoon-ho gave up 3 hits, 3 walks and 3 runs in only 2/3 of an inning.
Shin's record through 2008 was 28-20 with 28 saves and a 4.98 ERA in 273 games. He had walked 274 and given up 497 hits in 455 1/3 IP.
