Yukon
Yukon is the westernmost of Canada's three northern Territories. It was carved out of the Northwest Territories in 1898 as a result of the short-lived population boom created by the Klondike Gold Rush. It also borders Alaska, to the west, British Columbia to the south, and the Beaufort Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean, to the north. Its capital and largest city is Whitehorse, YK and total population was slightly above 40,000 as of 2021. It was known as Yukon Territory until 2002, when the shortened name was officially adopted.
While some youth and amateur baseball is played in Yukon, the sport's growth is hampered by the harsh climate and short summer season. Still, in the 1890s, whalers wintering on Herschel Island in the Beaufort Sea managed to set up an unexpected winter league to keep ship crews occupied during the long winters.
