Yuki Ito has been a star amateur infielder in Japan. He played for Nissan in the industrial leagues for over a decade and has been MVP of a couple major tournaments with them. Ito has also played for the Japanese national team. In the 2003 Baseball World Cup, he hit .400/.516/.760 with 10 runs and 8 RBI in 9 games. He just missed the top 5 in average, trailing #5 Olmedo Saenz by .010, and he led Japan in average, though not in OBP or slugging. He went 0 for 2 in the Bronze Medal game win over Taiwan but had 3 sacrifice hits from the #9 slot of the batting order. Eduardo Paret beat him out for All-Tournament honors at SS; Ito easily outhit double play mate Daisuke Kusano, the All-Tournament 2B.
Ito played for Japan in the 2005 Asian Championship. In the 2005 Baseball World Cup, he hit .333/.360/.333 while alternating between shortstop and third base.
