Biographical Information[edit]

Yoshitomo Miyaji played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 8 years.

Miyaji was signed by the Kokutetsu Swallows in 1952, and he soon joined their bullpen. He had a 3.18 ERA in 28 appearances in his rookie year, then went 3-13 with a 3.66 ERA in 1953 and 2-3 with a 3.63 ERA in 1955. Miyagi broke out in 1955, and he recorded a career-best 1.77 ERA in 116 1/3 innings. The 1956 season was his career year. Miyagi had a 12-12 record with a 2.54 ERA, and ranked 10th in strikeouts (197 behind Masaichi Kaneda). On September 19 in his hometown Kanazawa, Miyagi completed the third perfect game in NPB history with only 79 pitches, which was the fewest for a perfect game. He slumped to 5-6 with a 3.86 ERA in 1957, and his ERA rose to 4.42 in 1958. After allowing 10 runs in 6 1/3 innings in 1959, Miyagi announced his retirement.

Overall, Miyagi was 33-57 with a 3.25 ERA, struck out 378 and pitched 828 innings in 8 years in the NPB.
