Yoel Monzón pitched in Cuba and the US.
Monzón was 15-17 with a 5.32 ERA in three seasons for Matanzas in the Cuban Serie Nacional. In 257 IP, he hallowed 290 hits and 159 walks while fanning 152. He pitched 61 games (37 starts). He led the league with 9 intentional walks issued in 1997-1998.
He then defected and signed with the Colorado Rockies. He was 3-4 with a save and a 4.74 ERA for the 1999 Portland Rockies. With the 2000 Asheville Tourists, he was 4-1 with two saves and a 3.23 ERA in 39 games, fanning 83 in 64 IP. His career then ended with injury.
Monzón began his coaching career in 2006 as a pitching coach for the AZL Brewers. After a decade away from organized ball, he resurfaced as a pitching coach with the AZL Mariners in 2016-2019 and ACL Mariners in 2021. After the 2016 & 2017 seasons he also coached in the Arizona Fall League with the Peoria Javelinas.
The year 2022 proved to be quite adventurous for Monzón. Initially he was appointed to return to to ACL Mariners, but then joined the New York Mets as a major league staff assistant according to the Mets media guide.[1] However, at the end of the season he was listed as a pitching coach for the FCL Mets. Monzón only stayed with the Mets organization for one year before moving to the San Diego Padres' chain as pitching coach of the ACL Padres in 2023-2024.
