Biographical Information[edit]
Frank "Yip" Owens was not the same player as Frank "Yip" Owen even though the two played on the Chicago White Sox in 1909 and once formed a battery. While Owen was a pitcher, Owens was a catcher. He played one game for the Boston Americans in 1905, 64 for the White Sox in 1909, and then two seasons in the Federal League several years later. He is listed as the regular catcher for the Baltimore Terrapins in 1915, when he appeared in 99 games.
The name "Yip" is of uncertain background, and apparently he was mostly called "Frank". Owens was born in Canada and was playing major league ball when he was 19 years old. Although he played three years in the minors for the Memphis Egyptians, the bulk of his minor league time was with the Minneapolis Millers, with whom he spent ten seasons. His manager the whole time there was Joe Cantillon, and the team won the league pennant several times. One year he managed in the low minors.
After baseball he chose to settle in Minneapolis.
