Yeliar Castro signed with the Atlanta Braves in 2004. He debuted as a pro with the 2005 GCL Braves, going 0-2 with a 9.82 ERA and 12 walks in 11 innings. In 2006, he was 1-2 with a 5.32 ERA for the same club. Castro split time in 2007 between the GCL Braves (1-1, 2.79) and Danville Braves (1-1, 6.55). In 2008, Castro was 5-6 with a save and 4.98 ERA for the Rome Braves, striking out 77 in 72 1/3 IP.

He was a late addition to Panama's roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic. He pitched one game, relieving Manuel Corpas in the 7th inning of a loss to the Dominican Republic national team. He pitched the final two innings for Panama. In the 7th, he retired Jose Reyes. Willy Taveras singled but Castro got Fernando Tatis swinging and Hanley Ramirez on a ground ball. In the 8th, Miguel Tejada ground out and Robinson Cano walked. PH Jose Bautista singled. Nelson Cruz whiffed, but Castro surrendered a 3-run homer to Miguel Olivo. He then recovered to strike out Reyes on three pitches.
