Biographical Information[edit]
Xiu-Xiong Chen played and coached in Taiwan.
A submarine hurler, he pitched for the Taiwan national team in the 1967 Asian Championship (Bronze), 1969 Asian Championship (Silver), 1971 Asian Championship, 1972 Amateur World Series (Taiwan's first Amateur World Series), 1973 Asian Championship (Bronze) and 1973 Intercontinental Cup. He beat Japan in both 1971 and 1972. The Seibu Lions were interested in signing him but he did not turn pro. He managed Taiwan in the 1973 FEMBA Amateur World Series and 1974 Amateur World Series and coached for them in the 1986 World Junior Championship and 1989 World Port Tournament.
Chen was pitching coach of the Mercuries Tigers when the Chinese Professional Baseball League formed in 1990. He was coach of the Jungo Bears and was interim manager briefly (0-6) and was pitching coach of the Uni-President Lions in 1998; he died later that year. In 2019, he made the Taiwan Baseball Hall of Fame.
