Wright Field
Wright Field was a ballpark located in West Palm Beach, FL that hosted numerous minor league teams and many spring training games during its lifespan. It opened in 1924 as Municipal Athletic Field and in 1927 was renamed in honor of city manager George C. Wright. It was renamed again, becoming Connie Mack Field, in 1952, until its replacement by West Palm Beach Municipal Stadium in 1962.
The minor league teams that made Wright Field their home are the West Palm Beach Sheriffs of the Florida State League in 1928, the West Palm Beach Indians of the FSL and Florida International League from 1940 to 1955 (with an interruption during World War II), and the West Palm Beach Sun Chiefs of the FSL in 1956. In addition, it was the spring training home of the Philadelphia Athletics/Kansas City Athletics for most of its existence.
The ballpark's official capacity was 3,500, with a small segregated section for African-Americans. This number was exceeded significantly on March 20, 1949 when a spring training game featuring the Brooklyn Dodgers and Jackie Robinson taking on the Philadelphia Athletics in front of some 6,988 fans. The first spring training games there date back to 1925.
After the ballpark was decommissioned, its grandstand remained in used by Twin Lakes High School until its demolition in 1973.
