Biographical Information[edit]

Winfield Welch played for minor southern black teams. He later became a manager, guiding the Birmingham Black Barons from 1942 to 1945, winning Negro American League titles in 1943 and 1944. He lost both the 1943 Negro World Series and 1944 Negro World Series to the Homestead Grays. Welch later managed the Chicago American Giants.

Welch was the most frequent manager for the West in the East-West Game. After coaching for them in 1941, he led them in both 1942 matches, the 1944 East-West Game, 1945 East-West Game, first 1946 East-West Game, 1951 East-West Game and 1952 East-West Game, going 4-3 in his seven games as skipper.
