Willie Gaines pitched for six seasons in the Negro Leagues and briefly in the minors.
Gaines debuted with the Philadelphia Stars in 1950, when the Negro Leagues were already dying. He spent 1951 and most of 1952 with Philly, also spending part of 1952 with the Porterville Comets (0-1, 8.13, 43 R in 31 IP). He then moved to the Indianapolis Clowns for three years. In the 1953 East-West Game, he started for the East and took the loss in a 5-1 game. In three innings, he walked four, gave up three hits and three runs (one earned), struck out one and made an error. He was 0 for 1 at the plate. Manny Cartledge relieved him.
