Willie Washington
Willie Washington was a Negro League third baseman and shortstop who played most of his career in the 1950s for the Memphis Red Sox and the Kansas City Monarchs. In the relatively sparse coverage of the Negro Leagues in the 1950s, he was listed as Memphis's starting shortstop from 1954 to 1956, and the Monarchs' third baseman from 1957 through at least 1960.
He was regarded by sportswriters as a good fielder, and was occasionally listed among home run and RBI leaders during the time. He was selected to play in the East-West Game in 1955, 1956, both the first and second games in 1958, and 1960. He was named manager of the Monarchs in 1959, replacing Dizzy Dismukes. He was replaced in that role in 1960 by Sherwood Brewer, though he continued as a player.
