Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher William Plaza who defected from Cuba's junior national team at the 2000 World Junior Championship in Edmonton. Due to a multitude of immigration and paperwork problems, Plaza did not sign a major league contract until 2004, some four years after defecting. Plaza played two seasons in the New York Yankees farm system and two more in U.S. independent leagues after a one-season hiatus.

Plaza was 14 for 41 with two doubles and nine walks for the 2004 GCL Yankees but fell to .192/.306/.224 with no homers in 125 at-bats for the 2005 Charleston RiverDogs, backing up Irwil Rojas. He next was with the Charlotte County Redfish, hitting .330/.381/.474 in 2007. With the 2008 Atlantic City Surf, he produced at a .268/.338/.368 rate.
