Werner Gehrig
Werner Gehrig was on the German national team in the 1965 European Championship. Like the Iron Horse Lou Gehrig, he was a workhorse - he started three of their four games and completed all of them, going 1-2 with a 5.04 ERA; he fanned 40 in 25 IP but walked 24. He lost to the Dutch national team and Italy, the top two, but beat Spain to secure a Bronze for Germany. He was 1-for-9 at the plate, his one hit was a homer. Claus Helmig was the only pitcher Germany used in the event.
