Biographical Information[edit]
Wendell Magee was cut all three times he went out for baseball at high school, but at Samford University, which is where he went to college on a football scholarship, he got his chance to play baseball. He hit .379 as a junior and .386 as a senior. Wendell was picked in the 12th round of the 1994 amateur draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Playing for the Clearwater Phillies in 1995, he led the Florida State League with a .353 batting average and 177 hits. He ranked second in slugging that year and fourth in on-base percentage. Magee hit 24 homers for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons in 1998 to set a franchise record; it was broken 9 years later by Shelley Duncan.
Magee's son, Joshua Magee, played minor league ball.
