Biographical Information[edit]
Wayne Hattaway got his first job in baseball in 1952 at the age of 12 when he became a batboy for the Mobile Bears who were a AA team for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Hattaway was equipment manager for the Bears in 1956-1961, Dallas Rangers in 1962-1963, Charlotte Hornets in 1964-1971, Lynchburg Twins in 1972-1973, and Reno Silver Sox in 1974. He was the trainer of the Orlando Twins in 1975-1985 and equipment manager of Orlando beginning in 1986. He joined the Minnesota Twins as clubhouse attendant in 2002.
Wayne was a real character with a quick wit and always had a one-liner for everyone. The likes of Wayne Hattaway will not be seen in baseball again and when the Big Fella passed, so did an era. Everyone knew Wayne and he knew everyone but he couldn't always remember their names so he called everyone "Big'un".
Wayne "Big Fella" Hattaway passed away in Mobile, Alabama on April 30, 2020 after losing his battle with cancer.
