Biographical Information[edit]
In 1922 Walter Schmidt sat out most of the season due to a contract dispute. The Pittsburgh Pirates gave his job to rookie Johnny Gooch. When the team's pitching was disappointing, the team blamed it on the lack of a veteran backstop. They re-signed Schmidt and returned the catching job to him.
His brother Boss Schmidt was also a big league catcher.
