Walter Lonergan played for the Boston Red Sox in 1911. He later spent several years with the Portland Duffs.

"Walter Lonergan . . . does not know yet whether he will be able to get a leave of absence from the post office, so that he can go to Jersey City. Ever since he took up professional baseball he has had trouble getting leaves of absence, and he now feels that he has reached the end of his rope and that any further advances will be rejected." - Sporting Life, April 6, 1912

"Walter Lonergan secured a leave of absence from his job in the Boston post office and has been playing short for Hugh Duffy, at Portland. Now the postmaster has notified him that his time is up and he must return to sorting mail if he wants to hold his job." - Sporting Life, August 1, 1914
