Walter Rabb was the baseball coach at the University of North Carolina from 1947-1977, leading the team to a 540-358 record. He took the Tar Heels to four NCAA tournaments and two College World Series appearances. In February 1947, Rabb was the director of intermurals at North Carolina. When Bunn Hearn had a heart attack, Rabb took over the baseball team "until Hearn recovers", but ended up staying for 31 years.
Rabb was a shortstop who played four seasons in the minor leagues, one with the New York Yankees system. Rabb debuted in 1937 with the Snow Hill Billies, batting .242 with 0 HR and 26 RBI. In 1938, Walt fielded .953 for Snow Hill and hit .309/?/.399. Rabb split 1939 between Snow Hill (.322, 1 HR, 7 RBI) and two Yankee farm teams, the Akron Yankees (.233, 0 HR, 18 RBI) and Augusta Tigers (.271, 1 HR, 34 RBI). In his final season, Rabb returned to Snow Hill full-time and batted .270 with 3 homers and 49 RBI.
