Biographical Information[edit]
Left fielder Vern Spencer had 140 at-bats in his only season in the majors, for John McGraw's 1920 New York Giants. The 1920 Giants finished second that year, prior to winning the pennant in 1921-24.
Spencer played the first half of the season for Toronto, hitting .323, before he was traded for Benny Kauff.
Earlier, in 1915, he had played for Denver and led the Western League in hits.
Note: although some sources seem to confuse him with Tubby Spencer, his near contemporary, the two are different players.
He is the only major leaguer to have been born or died in Wixom, MI, a town northwest of Detroit.
