Biographical Information[edit]
Illinois native Vern Curtis spent six seasons in professional baseball from 1942 through 1948. He spent parts of three seasons with the Washington Senators, making his debut on September 6, 1943 and appeared in his final game on September 13, 1946. Vern appeared in just sixteen games over this time span, pitching twenty innings with an 0-1 record and a 5.70 ERA.
Starting as a 22 year old rookie in 1942 Vern appeared with four different teams in four different leagues. He pitched 169 innings in 27 games, built a 14-4 record and then spent most of the 1943 season with the Atlanta Crackers of the Southern Association going 16-12 with a 3.22 ERA. Curtis spent 1944 with the Minneapolis Millers of the American Association, with a 15-17 record and a 4.01 ERA.
The right-hander spent the 1947-48 seasons with the Chattanooga Lookouts of the class A-1 Southern Association. During these two seasons he went 20-23 and called it a career with a final minor league record of 68-60 while pitching 1,000 innings in 174 appearances.
Curtis served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a retired ironworker and died from a heart attack while fishing in the Ohio River on June 24, 1992. He was 72 years of age and is interred at the Roselawn Cemetery in Bardwell, Kentucky.
