Biographical Information

Vern Campbell was a minor league player and manager.

Campbell grew up on the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona. He joined the US Navy after high school and served two years. He split the 1950 season between the Globe-Miami Browns (.348/~.425/.600 in 36 G), Twin Falls Cowboys (.234/~.338/.375 in 21 G) and Independence Yankees (8 for 41, 2B), the latter two in the New York Yankees chain. With the 1951 Cowboys, he hit .335/?/.424 and won the Pioneer League batting title.

In 1952, he hit .265/.405/.365 for the Quincy Gems to end his time as a Yankees farmhand. His 92 walks were 7th in the Three-I League. In 1953, he produced at a .238/~.319/.349 clip for the Edmonton Eskimos. He improved to .302/~.396/.449 for Edmonton in 1954 and scored 92 runs. Back to his roots, he returned to Globe, AZ for 1955, managing the Globe-Miami Miners for the last part of the year and hitting .320/~.431/.487 with 34 doubles and 15 triples. He scored 96 runs and drew 95 walks. He was 7th in the Arizona-Mexico League in walks, tied Luis Casablanca for 7th in doubles and led in triples, one ahead of Joe Christopher, to go out with a bang. He later was a fireman and became state Fire Marshall and was active in his church.
